Surrounded by close friends and family, Mukul Deora's marriage was marked by memories of his late father.
Mukul Deora's wedding to his Delhi-based girlfriend Nitasha Thapar on February 19 was an occasion to celebrate for the family but also tinged with memories of the groom's father, the late former Union Minister and senior Congressleader Murli Deora, who passed away last year.
Keeping that in mind, the couple's nuptials were a low-key affair. The two chose a civil marriage ceremony, where they exchanged garlands. This was followed by an elegant reception at Tote on the Turf in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, attended by close to 1,000 guests.
Another function was held in Delhi for the bride's friends and family members on February 21. Mukul and Nitasha, says the groom's mother Hema, have known each other for over a year.
The families were friendly even before the couple started dating and Hema reveals that they were partially introduced to each other by their mums. "Mukul's father had given them his blessing," she says.
While Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi graced the Delhi get-together with her presence, the Mumbai reception saw the likes of Parmeshwar and Adi Godrej, Mukesh and Nita Ambani, Ashok Hinduja with daughters Satya and Ambika, Sachin Pilot and Jitin Prasada in attendance.
Satya Hinduja even performed a musical after the wedding. "The dance was set to the sounds of a storm and was a meditation of sorts. Satya made sure it was serene and lovely," says Hema.
Both family and the guests also got sentimental about the late Deora. Says Mukul, "Everyone was emotional." Almost all the family members gave a speech and said that the groom's father was severely missed.
"Every time I met his (Murli's) friends, I felt like he's standing behind them. I missed him terribly," says Hema, who wore a sari gifted to her by her late husband for the evening.
The wittiest remarks, however, came from the bride's brother Varun, who joked that when anyone called Nitasha, she instantly put her phone on speaker and the caller would hear Mukul in the background and viceversa.
In short, the couple were a package deal, he said. The bride's sister Ayesha, who got married to ex-Google head honcho Nikesh Arora last year, was also present at all the functions with her husband. Arora, currently SoftBank's vice-chairman, has flown back to the US and Ayesha, who was exuding a lovely "pregnant" glow according to Hema, will join him next month.
