Markets are like women, always commanding, always mysterious, always volatile: Rakesh Jhunjhunwala

Markets are like women, always commanding, always mysterious, always volatile: Rakesh Jhunjhunwala

"You have got to experience market because something which cannot be taught has to be learned. I mean it is like cooking," says Jhunjhunwala. (BCCL)

"You have got to experience market because something which cannot be taught has to be learned. I mean it is like cooking," says Jhunjhunwala. (BCCL)

Chitrangada Singh: What is one tip that you would like to give to all the womenwho are wanting to invest? I mean men invest and they know about stocks; but the women.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: No, I think women also know and understand, but the problem is that tips are hazardous for health and you cannot make money from broader knowledge and stock investing is like cooking and cannot be taught, it has to be learned.

Chitrangada Singh: It has to be learned! So, you have to waste some money and burn your fingers?

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: You have got to experience because something which cannot be taught has to be learned. I mean it is like cooking ... what my mother makes is much better than what the cook can make.

Chitrangada Singh: But you know the recipe book ... so let us open up a page and tell us something that you can ....

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Madam, the quest to learn is a journey. I have learned much but much is still unlearned. I do not think, like people say, that I am a guru or I know everything. But I can tell you markets are like women, always commanding, always mysterious, always volatile, always exciting and it is not a joke.

In my 25-30 years of experience in the markets, just as you cannot have a good relationship with a woman by bullying her, you cannot have a good relationship with the market by trying to bully it or say that you are the king. Market is king.

Chitrangada Singh: Basically, like the market is taking the nation down, just as a woman takes down the nation!

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: No, markets are not taking the nation down. Markets are reflecting the realities of the nation.

Chitrangada Singh: So okay, one very important question that I have. Are we going through a recession because I think we are? As much as everything else tells us we have such fantastic investments coming in, FDI is growing and everything is happening but I really think when I feel around me, I think there's a recession which nobody is talking about?

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: I think there is a slowdown, there is a recession, no doubt about it. There is a recession in Bollywood I do not think so. Films are getting expensive by the day. They are making more money by the day.

Chitrangada Singh: They are making more money by the day for sure, yes.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: So, I mean there is a slowdown in the country but I think it is temporary, it will reverse itself.

Chitrangada Singh: Yes, properties are dropping a little.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Properties are not dropping.

Chitrangada Singh: You would not know, I am telling you, little bit, I think there is a slight drop. I think you are right.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: So you invest in property?

Chitrangada Singh: Yes, some.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Feel very safe about it?

Chitrangada Singh: Sort of because I think that is one thing that would probably, you know at least it is on ground and it is there instead of papers in your locker.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: But I think those lockers and the papers are far easier and far profitable to deal with than property. Anyway, let as talk about yourself, what have been your childhood experiences and how do you remember it, what is it that you remember of your childhood, your education?

Chitrangada Singh: My childhood experience, my father was in the army. I remember small cantonment areas where all families lived together and I remember clubs, I remember going with my mother for these ladies' meets.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Kitty parties!

Chitrangada Singh: Yes, they have ladies' parties where ... it is not exactly like a party but actually they work with the wives of soldiers. There is something called a Bada Khana where everybody comes, all the men from all ranks, everybody comes together and have dinner. So, memories from the army yes, I remember, cycling to swimming pools with friends, cycling to school. Yes, it is just all of that.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: So, it's always been the physical activity, intensive physical activity?

Chitrangada Singh: Not intensive, just really having fun, just being out ... actually yes.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: What about your siblings?

Chitrangada Singh: I have a brother who is older than me. He is a professional golfer. His name is Digvijay, so it is the two of us.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: And what brought you to the world of glamour and modelling?

Chitrangada Singh: I started by making some pocket money. That is the only reason why I started modelling.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: You were in Delhi?

Chitrangada Singh: In Delhi, yes, when I was in college in fact.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Lady Irwin?

Chitrangada Singh: Lady Irwin College, yes.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: What did you study there? History or English?

Chitrangada Singh: No, Food Nutrition.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: You are applying all that later on?

Chitrangada Singh: Yes.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Has it been worthwhile to come to the world of glamour, doing a lot of sacrifice in the world interacting ....

Chitrangada Singh: Yes, but I think that is anywhere in the world. That kind of uncertainty, insecurity, all kinds of people are in the world; but the good thing is that I love it and it is not just for the fact that you get to be sitting here but also that it is so creative, it is so exciting, it is so different everyday. I feel very blessed for the fact that I get to do something that I love instead of swiping a card everyday and going for a 9 to 5 job and getting a cheque which is great as well but this is something that I enjoy and I am very happy to be here.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Someone called you the personification of Indian beauty. I think the F1 and F2 drivers?

Chitrangada Singh: I read that.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: How do you feel about it?

Chitrangada Singh: Yes, it is a compliment. I am very bad with taking compliments but I think that is a great complaint, yes.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: Then what is Indian beauty according to you?

Chitrangada Singh: What they mean is oriental looking, it is the features I guess. I think we should check with them what they meant by that?

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: You did not check with them?

Chitrangada Singh: I have not checked with them. I read about it in the newspaper. No, I have not checked.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s bullish bets take D-Street by surprise, laps up beaten-down stocks

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s bullish bets take D-Street by surprise, laps up beaten-down stocks

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s bullish bets take D-Street by surprise

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s bullish bets take D-Street by surprise

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala did not sit idle when the markets went into a tailspin in the quarter ended September. He used the opportunity to buy into some new stockswhile boosting his holding in others.

Some of his additional purchases would have been to take advantage of the recent plunge in share prices and to lower the average cost of his holdings and have surprised long-time Jhunjhunwala watchers. He has cut his stake in favourite high fliers like Titan Industries, Crisil and Lupin to buy beaten-down, old-economy laggards likeKesoram and VIP Industries.

Many of his stocks including McNally Bharat,Hindustan Oil Exploration, Prime Focus, A2Z Maintenance, Sterling Holiday, Viceroy Hotels and Alphageo have reported net losses for FY13.

It is a strategy that baffles some, but the old fox of Dalal Street may have a trick or two up his sleeve. ET takes a look at six stocks that he is bullish on and why.

FIRSTSOURCE

The RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group bought out Firstsource last year and the BPO major’s fortunes have been on an upswing since then. Margins expanded 214 bps to 11.7% versus 9.6% in Q1FY13, while return on equity rose to 9.3% from 2.2% in FY09.

Revenue grew 6% to Rs 723 crore, while net profit rose 42% to Rs 41 crore. The stock has risen 81% since Rakesh bought the shares in early July to Rs 19.55.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s bullish bets take D-Street by surprise
ESCORTS
The company’s shares hit a two-year high on August 6 the day Jhunjhunwala bought more than six lakh shares. The shares have risen 41% since then but second quarter results have been disappointing.

Revenue fell 19% to Rs 940 crore while net profit fell 25% to Rs 44 crore. But the shares ended up 2.44% on Wednesday to Rs 99.10 on hopes that the monsoon will increase demand for tractors and that the third quarter will be better.

DHFL

Rakesh bought 25 lakh shares in Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL) last week. The stock is available cheap, trading at 2.82 times its FY14 earnings and 2.41 times in FY15 earnings. Currently, the stock is traded at a P/E of 2.82 times FY14E and 2.41 times FY15E earnings as the perception on the stock is governed by the promoter family’s relations with realty major HDIL.

DHFL’s financial performance, though has been impressive. Operating income for the second quarter rose 43% to Rs 1,163 crore, while net profit climbed 50% to Rs 129 crore.

KESORAM

The cement and tyre major’s shares have fallen 42% so far this year. The BK Birla Group firm’s net loss increased in the first quarter to Rs 100 crore compared with Rs 96 crore for the yearago period, taking its accumulated loss in the last three years to Rs 900 crore. Its tyre business has turned around in Q4 of FY13 while new capacity in the cement business may increase revenue this year.

But Kesoram’s financial performance has been appalling and the reason behind Jhunjhunwala’s additional purchase may have more to do with lowering the average cost than fundamental reasons. His stake in Kesoram is now at 6.83%.

NCC

The Andhra Pradesh-based construction and power major is in advanced talks to sell its stake in 1,320-MW power plant to Sembcorp, a Singapore-based major. The company is likely to exit the project at a slight premium to book value and could result in a 30% earnings upside.

NCC’s net profit in April-June 2013 declined by 71% toRs 5.8 crore and its shares have plunged 60% so far this year. Unlike an Escorts, which is a play on agri growth, NCCappears to be a trading bet based on the impending stake sale.

VIP INDS

The suitcase and luggage player has very little going for it, but Jhunjhunwala increased his stake to 10% from 6.49%. The unorganised segment continues to grow at a faster rate due to import of baggage from China and Singapore.

VIP’s net profit declined by 2% y-o-y to Rs 23 crore for the quarter ended June 2013 while full-year profit fell about 50% to Rs 32 crore. The stock has fallen 32% this year.

Billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala on Monday bought half of a seafacing building, comprising six plush apartments, in Mumbai's upmarket Malabar Hill area owned by Standard Chartered Bank, for Rs 176 crore, more than two persons who knew details of the open bidding, told ET asking not to be named.

Jhunjhunwala told ET that he did not want to confirm nor deny the development. A spokesman for Standard Chartered declined to comment. A spokesman for property consultant Jones Lang LaSalle, which was the transaction advisor, also declined to comment.

This is the fourth high-value transaction to take place in south Mumbai over the last few months.

Investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala buys six Mumbai flats for Rs 176 crore, property value in south Mumbai drops

In May this year, YES Bank CEO and managing director Rana Kapoor had bought a residential building on Altamount Road from Citibank and GlaxoSmithKline for Rs 128 crore.

In June, glassware manufacturer Borosil bought a seafacing duplex for Rs 43 crore.

In September, a duplex in Darshan Apartments on Mount Pleasant Road was sold to the Bulchandani family for Rs 57 crore

The who's who of the business world stays on Malabar Hill. The Ruias of Essar group, Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry, Adi Godrej, Pranav Mody and Venugopal Dhoot— all have homes here. The combined net worth of residents of Malabar Hill is around $30 billion.

Jinnah House

Jinnah House

(Jinnah House at Malabar…)

Former residence of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and residents the Maharashtra governor and chief minister are also located in this area. Standard Chartered and a number of other companies such as Citibank, Hindustan Unilever, GSK, Bank of America and HSBC have owned many apartments in prime south Mumbai localities that were given as incentives and perks to their mid to top-level executives in the 1950s and 1960s.

With that culture long gone, these companies and banks have resorted to monetising such properties.

In the last few years, Citibank has sold over a dozen apartments in Mumbai—five apartments in Colaba's Harbour Heights building and one each in NCPA Apartments on Nariman Point, Meher Apartments on Altamount Road and Kanti Apartments on MountMary Road in Bandra. In 2011, Standard Chartered and HSBC sold a five-storey residential apartment block, Bishopsgate at Breach Candy to real estate developer Peninsula Land for Rs 272 crore.

HUL recently sold its apartment block in Worli, called Gulita, to Piramal Realty for Rs 452 crore and has now looking at selling 55 apartments in prime south Mumbai's neighbourhoods of Nepean Sea Road, Altamount Road, Cuffe Parade, Malabar Hill and Colaba for over Rs 300 crore.

ET has earlier reported that while property appreciation in Sobo, as the area is fondly called, has dropped to 10 per cent from 30 per cent two years ago, rental yields have fallen by more than half.

"Inventory has increased in the last two years, but sales are not happening at the same pace," said Ashok Narang, partner at real estate property firm L Lachhmandas & Co. Besides falling re-sales, rental yields too have come down from 3 per cent-5 per cent in 2008-11 to 1 per cent-2 per cent in 2011-13.

"As of now, the rental yields in south Mumbai are even below 3 per cent and it makes no sense for an investor to come in," another broker said. With prices of properties not rising as fast as they did in the peak years, investors and speculators had gone out of the market.

Midcap crash leaves Rs 1,000 crore hole in big bull Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s portfolio

Midcap crash leaves Rs 1,000 crore hole in big bull Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s portfolio

Following the leader may not always be in people's best interests, especially when it comes to stock selection.
Many small investors, who fashioned their portfolios after that of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, the so-called Warren Buffet of India, discovered this painful lesson with the recent mid-cap crash eroding his portfolio value by Rs 1,000 crore.
Stocks owned by Jhunjhunwala — Bilcare, A2Z Maintenance and DB Realty, Autoline Industries, Hindustan Oil Exploration and Delta Corp — which quoted at high multiples despite poor results, were hammered down as negative sentiment originating from stocks used in margin funding spread towards other fundamentally weak stocks.
Many small investors purchased these stocks not for their sound fundamentals or prospects but merely because they were part of billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's portfolio.
This is borne out by 21 of the 29 listed stocks held by Jhunjhunwala that have declined between 20% and 70% so far this year compared with a 3.5% fall in benchmark Sensex and a 15% fall in the BSE Mid-cap index.
Nearly 10 companies he invested in, including Aptech, McNally Bharat and Delta Corp, reported adecline in revenues for FY12 from a year ago. The likes of Hindustan Oil Exploration, Prime Focus, A2Z Maintenance,Sterling Holiday, Viceroy Hotels and Alphageo reported net losses for the nine months ending December 2012 (FY13).
Further, more than half of promoters' holdings in eight companies including DB Realty, Viceroy Hotels,Pantaloon Retail and NCC have been pledged as on December 2012.
Even Jhunjhunwala's favourite stock picks such as Titan Industries, Crisil and Rallis Industries underperformed the broader market. The only five stocks to have outperformed the indices are Lupin,Geometric, Prime Focus, Agro Tech Foods and Adinath Exim. So has Jhunjhunwala's strategy to 'Buy Right Hold Tight' gone wrong? Some market experts think so.

"Rakesh is known for investing in concept-based stocks for the long term, when nobody usually touches them," said Kush Katakia, founder of Beanstalk Advisory. "However, this strategy seems to have backfired as investors dumped these stocks during the recent midcap crash, and opted instead for companies with sound financials."
An e-mail query to Jhunjhunwala on the subject went unanswered. Call it negative sentiment or coincidence, stocks in Jhunjhunwala's portfolio have been hammered one after the other by Dalal Street over the past few weeks. The latest in the line is Bilcare.
The stock plunged 48% in the past four trading sessions through Friday. Jhunjhunwala, the second biggest public investor in the company after Deutsche Bank, held 8.51% in the company.
The billionaire investor entered this counter in June 2006, buying about 11.6% stake at an average price of Rs 360. The stock, which hit a record ofRs 1,830 in January 2008, currently trades at Rs 72.

A2Z Maintenance, in which Jhunjhunwala held 19.92% stake, has plunged 70% so far this year and 94% since its listing in December 2010. The Jhunjhunwala-backed diversified infrastructure company declined 20% on the listing day, after which he bought an additional 16 lakh shares.
The recent pick of DB Realty, in which Jhunjhunwala bought nearly 12.5 lakh shares in October last year at Rs 90 per share, 83% lower from its record high of Rs 540 in March 2010, further declined 63% this year and currently trades at Rs 57.65.
"The overall sentiment, especially in the midcap segment, has affected stocks owned by Rakesh," said another analyst who declined to be named. "A slowdown in business, pledging by promoters, over-leveraging, failure to service debt and ratings downgrades were the prime reasons for the recent carnage in midcap stocks, and Rakesh's portfolio was no exception."
